Greetings from the Sunday School class led by Chuck Lewis

Thought for the week: If Jesus' faithful commitment to God cost His life, why should we expect following Him to be comfortable and pain free.
Last week's Old Testament Quiz: What former slave became ruler of Egypt?
Answer: Jacob's favorite son Joseph was sold into slavery by his resentful brothers. After several setbacks Joseph miraculously (God's plan) rose to rule Egypt.
This week's Old Testament Quiz: When the whole earth had one language there arose those that wanted to make a name for themselves and build a tower to heaven. What happened next?
Last week's lesson raised some of the same issues in Jerusalem that we have in our churches today. How do we invest in both preaching and feeding, evangelism and service? We continue our struggle to allocate resources effectively so the word of compassion is matched by the act of service.
We study this week the calling of Phillip in Acts to interpret Bible scripture and baptize a person that would not be invited into the Jewish church. We also study how we are called to break down religious and cultural barriers. Background scriptures come from Matthew, Galatians, Romans, and Acts. Come learn with us this Sunday at 10:00 AM in the Conference Room.

New Sunday School Options
After much deliberation and debate, the Christian Education Committee is pleased to offer a new format for Sunday School classes this fall. All classes will meet from 10:00-10:45. As a result of options offered before worship, only children ages 3-2nd grade will attend the enrichment class that leaves immediately after the Time With Young Church.
There are classes for everyone!
Adult classes will be held in the Session Room, Hayes Room and the upstairs blue Sunday School room. We invite you to roam around and decide which class is the best fit for you!
Children ages 3 years through 1st grade will meet in the classroom beside the stairwell on the top floor.
Elementary Students grades 2-5 will meet in the yellow Sunday School Room upstairs.
Middle & High School Students will meet in the Parlor located in the basement.
We are also working on keeping up with Presbyterian Safe Sanctuary policies which means that we will need more adults who are willing to be substitute teachers and nursery attendants. Please contact Amy Kesterson at the church office to find out how you can serve your congregation!

Introit “He Leadeth Me” M.O.O.S.E.

Prayer of the Day (unison)

In the darkness of night and the brightness of day, you, O Lord, are present to us. As we wrestle with situations which seem to drain us of our energy; as we struggle to find out who you call us to be, you reach out to us with reassurance of empowerment and courage for the days ahead. Calm our spirits and prepare our hearts and lives to receive your awesome grace. It is in Jesus’ name that we pray. Amen.

Hymn #482 “Praise Ye the Lord, The Almighty” Lobe Den Herren

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession (unison)
Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith Brief Statement of Faith
In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.
We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God’s commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God’s condemnation.

Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all the families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondate. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still.
