Organized 1783 Built 1796 Issue 21, Monday, 05-22-2017

This past Wednesday at the meeting of the Session, two new initiatives were approved. You'll be hearing more about them in the coming months, but I wanted to go ahead and introduce them to you here.

1) Sunday School for all ages from 10:00 - 10:45. In order to facilitate children being able to worship and parents being able to attend Sunday School, we're moving all Sunday School classes to before worship! During worship children 3rd grade and younger till have the option of being dismissed for supervised play after the children's sermon. I'm really looking forward to introducing the different parts of the worship service to all of the kids, and to welcoming more adults to Sunday School!

2) Committee Night. In order to facilitate greater consistency and openness, starting this fall, all committees will start meeting on the same night- the first Wednesday of the month. (Which means September 6 will be our inaugural night!). If you've ever thought about serving on a committee and just wanted to see more about what they are all about, this is a great way to come and give one a try. We'll start at 7:00 in the sanctuary and will end no later than 8:30.

One other initiative that isn't new but I want to highlight is a program called "Suppers for Six." This program of the fellowship committee is a wonderful way to meet new people, enjoy fellowship, and share a meal! Once sign-ups are complete you will be assigned a group of six people. Over a four month period you will be invited to get together 3 times. It can be at a restaurant or at someone's home. The host can prepare all of the food or it can be pot-luck. Children can be included or you can decide to have kid-free evening (let us know if you need help with child care!) Your group decides on meeting dates, location, times, hosts, etc. And then, in four months the groups will be reshuffled. Over a year's time you'll have the opportunity to get to know at least 18 people from Old Stone Presbyterian Church! This is a great way to strengthen our ties and to learn, so I hope that you will all consider signing up. We're hoping to have lists ready to go by the first week of June, so now is the time to sign up! Email Ben Lewis at bpmlewis3@yahoo.com if you are interested.

Finally… I hope to have good news to announce about the manse very soon- we're just waiting for things to be official before we make any sort of announcement. In real estate, things aren't done until they are really done, but please know how diligent the session has been in working on this project- we have some wonderful leaders at Old Stone.

Peace,
Rev. Anna

Greetings from the Sunday School Class led by Chuck Lewis.

Thought for the week: Where godliness is seen as a means of financial gain, it will never lead to truth.
Last week's New Testament Quiz: People were selling their possessions and giving the money to those in need. Name the husband and wife that sold a piece of property, withheld some of the money, and claimed that all the money was donated.
Answer: When Peter confronted Ananias, the husband, about this he fell down and died. About three hours afterward, Sapphira, the wife, came in and was confronted by Peter and immediately fell down and died (Acts 5: 1-11).
This week is an Old Testament Quiz: After Jonah was rescued from the fish to whom did God tell him to go and preach?
One question for discussion in our lesson last week was how have you felt Got has been at work in your life or church to bring peace and wholeness to your community? A part of this week's lesson will help us through situations when people become displeased and angry when things do not go their way. Background scriptures come from Exodus, Numbers, Nehemiah, Psalms, and Jonah. Come learn with us this Sunday at 10:00 AM in the Conference Room.

Memorial Day Observance “God Bless America”
(the choir, with soloist Renee Fife-Ahern, will sing the verse and refrain.
The congregation is then invited to stand and sing the refrain a second time)

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

God Bless America, land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.
God bless America, My home sweet home.

Prayer of the Day (unison)
God unheld by word or wall;
power of love beyond all others.
Lift us from fatigue and cynical contempt;
make us ready for you Spirit of transforming fire;
and turn our hearts to the mending of the world;
Through Jesus Christ, the name above all names. Amen.

Prayer of Confession (unison)
God of grace and God of glory,
you have clothed us with power from on high.
Christ, who is risen and ascended,
has opened our minds to understand you
and our hearts to know the hope to which you call us.
Still we feel helpless in the face of sin,
paralyzed by evil's sway in the world,
unsure of your power to redeem what seems lost.
Forgive us, we pray.
Convict us of your love, convince us of the clear path ahead
and renew us in your wisdom, mercy, and power. Amen.

Declaration of Pardon
Leader: Hear and believe the good news of the gospel.
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Affirmation of Faith The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the People and the Lord’s Prayer
…..Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
